Now that I’ve accepted that there aren’t too many cards that mill everyone and aren’t blue, let’s focus on the more directed mill cards. The remaining cards were at least printed in this millennium and vary from “surprisingly good in Limited” ( Ghoulcaller’s Bell) to “what was the plan when they printed this?” ( Shared Trauma). I’d bet most people are going to need to read it, though. The others are a little more recognizable in some contexts for example, if you remember the old Saproling Cluster combo decks from the year 2000, you probably remember Whetstone being the kill card. Of the artifacts, Mesmeric Orb is the one you’ve probably seen the most, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to see it here. You’d probably never consider putting Returned Reveler or Sibsig Host in another deck, which is part of what I love about this list – it’s got that “what does that do?” factor that I crave. I’m focusing on that as much as possible rather than the dies or the “leaves your graveyard” part because I find it the most interesting, but obviously there are other ways to build this deck (and don’t worry, we’ll still take advantage of both.) Besides Syr Konrad’s own activated ability, I’ve included seven cards in this decklist that mill the whole table. Syr’s natural four toughness makes him a great target for creatures to trade up into. You’re going to want to mill everyone as much as you can to get maximum value out of Syr Konrad’s damage trigger. Be cautious during attack and block phases however. He is a little on the costly side at five mana, but for the effect he can have on the board and game state, it is definitely worth it. The verdictĭespite the horrendously large text block and headache that it induces, Konrad appears to be an extremely strong card. However, it would not be surprising to see him appear as sideboard or 1-offs in sacrifice and reanimator decks. Konrad will probably be seen mostly in mill decks across the formats. After the addition of Ashiok, Deam Render and Jace, Wielder of Mysteries in War of the Spark bolstering the mill, self or otherwise, power of Dimir, this card looks to give mill another advantage with a tough creature that can consistently ping the opponent while milling. Syr Konrad, the Grim reinvigorates one of the oldest alternate-win conditions in the game, again. The final condition lets the effect trigger on reanimation and Gravedigger effects. The second condition allow for the effect to trigger off of mill and discard effects. The first condition allows the effect to trigger off of all creature deaths including tokens. However, this is the first time the effect triggers off of such a variety of conditions. Players have seen similar effects in the past like Cruel Celebrant. A creature card enters a graveyard from anywhere other than the battlefield. The rules text on the card states that the card does one damage to each opponent whenever one of three conditions is met. This makes it much more difficult to understand why Syr Konrad has such a grim text box. From the simplification of Channel to the constant inability to fix the rules text of Oubliette to fit into the text box, it is apparent that Wizards is trying to make the game easier to pick up and understand. Simplification of text boxes has been of extreme importance to the design team at WotC. Magic is known for being a game where, if you can read, you can play. Whenever another creature dies, or a creature card is put into a graveyard from anywhere other than the battlefield, or a creature card leaves your graveyard, Syr Konrad, the Grim deals 1 damage to each opponent. Finally, Syr Konrad, the Grim also carries a massive block of rules text. This effect mimics that of Ghoulcaller’s Bell, but it can be repeated multiple times in a turn, given you have the mana. Konrad also allows his controller to pay one black and one generic mana to put the top card of each library into its respective graveyard. He costs two black and three generic mana for his five power and four toughness, a respectable stat line for a creature of his mana cost. Syr Konrad is a black Human Knight Creature. However, this latest spoiler of Syr Konrad, the Grim promises to be one of the most interesting Legendary Creatures in the set. The newest expansion has already shown off a new mechanic in Adventures that has an interesting twist on dual-use cards. Magic: The Gathering Throne of Eldraine spoiler season started just yesterday and earlier today we saw the return of a fan favorite, Garruk.
